2014 EXHIBITION :: - HEIST ANTI-GALLERY - | LINDEN GARDENS, LONDON
Reflections on the darker side of London through the ubiquitous calling-card laden telephone boxes that openly solicit sex for money outside most London underground stations.
Phone boxes for their intended purpose are obsolete and on death row in these modern times and eventually alternative uses ought to be explored to the fullest (conversions to cash machines and even book exchanges exist in some already and are good examples).
Fascinated by the simple beauty of an object without purpose, a wallflower in a world that doesn’t stand still to take note. The combination though of a decaying and dying object like the phone box and the sex-trade subculture, which in itself is an epitome of both the most life affirming act in human nature as well as societies darkest traits, is what moves and shakes the artist's inner core. London’s underground network of pimps will maybe have to resort to other places to peddle sex, but that’s all the more reason to take a long last look at these ‘boxes of tricks’!
These images are snapshots of the merging of an underground culture as well as a former useful iconic landmark, ironically helping each other out and prevailing through each other, where everyone could see it and nobody ever does.
The interest in this undertaking has been to capture and observe these viewpoints as well as the magnificent beauty behind all of this through the artistic lens, allowing viewers to scrutinise them without shame or awkwardness and in doing so consider what this signifies for us in today’s society.

"The Alpha Gallery is delighted to present - Abstract Details in Colour - by photographer J.Harry Edmiston. As a first solo show, from capture to print, the elements behind a methodical approach to image-making present an exhibition of beautiful abstract aesthetic that aims to exemplify an understanding of highly technical elements of the photographic process. The result is a series of strikingly beautiful photographs using their presentation as a tool to further their critical and playful approach to the medium".
